Thatch Caye, Belize: for total seclusion

Approximately 450 islands dot the coastline of Belize, including the 11 acre island of Thatch Caye. Known for its lush vegetation, and with access to some of the best dive spots in the world, it's a real hidden gem.

Just a few miles off the coast of Dangriga, it's a car-free zone that also houses a private all-inclusive resort, which is actually the only resort on the island. It doesn't get more private than that. The chilled-out vibes are welcoming for ocean-lovers and serenity-seekers alike, with an eco-lodge that offers relaxed beach charm as an alternative to high-end luxury.

Sleep under the stars and over the waves

Choose between an oceanfront cabana or a simple yet spacious overwater bungalow. The luxury of Thatch Caye comes from the serenity, breathtaking nature, and Robinson Crusoe-like feeling you get once you step foot on the private island.

Enjoy a cocktail while you dip your feet in the water and watch the endless stars sparkling over the ocean from the comfort of your hammock. You don’t need to worry about getting the best star-gazing spot either – the resort is limited to only 30 guests.

A diver’s paradise

When you book a getaway to a Pacific Ocean island, it's almost bad manners not to spend some time below the surface. The largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere is only a few minutes boat ride away from Thatch Caye, and the island's 5-star PADI Dive operation offers tours to extraordinary dive spots for both experienced divers and curious beginners. One must-visit site is the famous Blue Hole – Jacques Cousteau once declared the vertical cave one of the best dive sites on the planet.

It's possible to stay closer to land and snorkel in the shallows around the island too, and a night dive or a night snorkel is a real must-do experience, to watch how life below the surface shifts once the sun sets.

Explore the jungle

The underwater world of the barrier reef is not to be missed, but there's also a lot happening up on land. Belize was once the center of the Mayan culture, and still has a high concentration of archeological sites to explore.

Almost half of the country is covered with dense rainforest too, home to incredible biodiversity. Howler monkeys live between the tree branches and Baird's tapirs, Belize’s national animal, roam through the undergrowth.

Just a short drive away from Dangriga, there's the only jaguar preserve in the world. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve covers about 150 square miles of tropical forest in south-central Belize and is home to over 1000 jaguars, along with more than 300 bird species, such as the Keel-billed Toucan.
